GOAL 5: GREATER TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

I will work with the society’s VP Finance, Finance Committee and Constituencies, as well as the Presidents and VPs Finance of society and university groups receiving dedicated student fees, to prepare either bi-annual or annual financial reports. This would update members on finances and allow for adjustments based on students’ feedback on how money should be spent. The report shall be made public on the society websites for the membership. Constituencies or affiliated colleges’ financial reports shall be linked to the society website.

In order for AMS councilors and members to have a clearer picture on how AMS businesses and investments generate contributions and the roles contributions play in supporting society services, I will propose that the next VP Finance and Finance Committee to prepare separate Fiscal Year budgets specific to businesses expenditures and revenues to be submitted to council in June 2019, and separate quarterly reports there after. This will allow our membership to view the businesses expenditures and revenues, as well as investment portfolios details, (which includes the list of companies the AMS invests $16 million in) on the website.

I will strengthen the Advisory Board to the Society (ABS) and ensure that the board becomes operational, strategic and effective in the summer of 2019. For greater transparency, the audited finances of the society shall be presented to the ABS by the auditing firm, as the members of ABS are likely to have more experience, as they are professionals and experts in their fields.
